This has been a long time coming. A lot of the content you’ll see on here from 2011-2015 is related to food and nutrition, and the sweet satisfaction that comes from Christ alone. I lost speed, motivation, and excitement for those issues. As I look back, I can see God was broadening this message. I started to form words to the thoughts that had been slushing around in my head for the last two years this past Advent season. In the midst of glogg, Spode, online shopping, fancy hotels in the city, eggnog in a moose mug, and alll the cookies, I was cautioned from multiple realms to not replace Christ with the good things he gave me. The caution was to not make the created things ultimate, rather to make the Creator ultimate and of highest esteem in my life. Christmas was so good last year that I’m considering celebrating Christmas in July.
This isn’t a new thought. There’s nothing new under the sun, right? John Piper pioneered these thoughts and coined the term “Christian Hedonism”–taking great pleasure in good things of this world because of the great God who gave them to us. Additionally, C.S. Lewis wrote an essay on this where he says “Every preference of a small good to a great involves the loss of the small for which the sacrifice was made.” If all the good things on this blog were just that, how disappointing. For example: good coffee goes bad, the “best” sweater falls apart, the ultimate pen and journal fade, and the most delicious apple pie fails us. The things on this blog are good. When we put God in his rightful place on high, we can then turn and see all these good things he has gifted us with and truly enjoy them, second to our enjoyment in him our great God.
Why a Blog?
And so, that is what you’ll see on this blog from now on: good things that point to our great God. Click the top navigation buttons for a little taste of the specific topics I’ll be putting up here. Why put this on a blog? Why not just leave it to only telling my friends? When I like something, I really like something. You can read more about that in the About section or on my Instagram. I love to write about what I’m loving and I want to share it with you! I hope when you’re searching the internet for “What is the best ______?” that you think to turn here. This is a catalog for myself and for you of what I feel are the best things. As you close this browser and return to your offline life I hope you have something new to try or experience knowing that it will be good, and God is greater. Always.
