Disclosure: I know actually nothing about essential oils. I had heard some of my internet friends talking about Ningxia Red (Christa and Jenn) and a unicorn blend oil roller (Sheri), no idea what it’s for but I NEED it, and I occasionally rubbed 10 year old peppermint oil (from Whole Foods) into lotion on my husband’s forehead when he had headaches. I don’t know which ones you can ingest and which ones will kill you if you do, I don’t know which ones help anxiety and which ones clean mildew. All I know is that my home was getting a little smelly from our fluffy pup and my Creighton practitioner gently encouraged me to start using more natural products. Enter Young Living oils!
I promised you on this blog to share good things with you. If I was with you today I would probably wreak like alllll the essential oils in the Starter Kit and would not be able to stop talking about these new things I am implementing in our home. I’m not selling these but because they’re expensive, if you’re wanting to buy, consider buying them from this blog. It will fuel my next order or two for deodorant, tick help, and good smelling home stuff.
I’m detailing for you briefly the first 4 things I did TODAY with my new essential oils. I was eagerly awaiting our mailwoman’s delivery (I have waited 2 weeks for this first delivery! FedEx refresh, FedEx refresh….) and ripped the box open and immediately started diffusing. Oh ya, I know the lingo now. One side note, I ordered Joy in addition to the Starter Kit which I am SO happy I did. Or should I say I am so joyful. Stop it Katie. Now, after dinner has been made and eaten, I’m so excited about these other ways I started using my new essential oils immediately!
One other point of note. I should probably write a separate blog post detailing the ways we’ve changed our habits and home products in hopes of less harmful chemicals and more babies conceived (one would be good for now!) We started making BIG changes 2 years ago when I first learned about parabens in our regular home products. That summer I changed deodorant, body wash, face wash, lotion, household cleaners, laundry detergent, some make up, and discontinued a pest service that sprayed inside our home. I’ll just link two things (here and here) that helped me gain more knowledge about this and mayyyyybeeeee write a more detailed blog post later.
Anyway, back to the 4 things I did AS SOON AS I POSSIBLY COULD. I was seriously so excited to make these changes. Some were purely for my joy (that was on accident), and some were to make healthier home decisions.
Essential Oils Diffused In All Our Rooms!
I dropped 5 drops of each of Lemon, Joy, Peppermint, and Purification. I also used filtered tap water, the instructions suggested mineral or tap water. It smells so fresh! No more candles for this girl! I think the Purification has a strong citronella and tea tree. I would probably do less of that next time but it still is making every room in my home smell refreshing. I’m not kidding–started in the living room, then our bedroom, then the basement, and it’s currently diffusing our family room. SO lovely. Also, look how pretty this is! It was quite a bit more to get this particular diffuser (the Aria) but my sister has it so I knew how awesome it was. Real wood, real glass, very classy.
Put on Dryer Balls and Voila!
Guys. I stopped using dryer sheets eons ago. I’m not really sure why, I do like the smell, and it’s helpful to make things smell extra clean, and who doesn’t love the Snuggles bear? But I’m pretty sure it’s been since 2012 that I’ve bought them. We got a new washer and dryer in 2014 that we absolutely love. And by “we” I mean I love them, Joey doesn’t know how to use them. Now that the washer is actually doing its job and rinsing clothes, plus I’m using more natural laundry detergent, our clothes no longer smell like detergent, as they shouldn’t. They don’t have a smell actually. So I’ve been wanting something to refresh them and our Creighton practitioner discouraged dryer sheets and recommended dryer balls and essential oils. Hey-ooooo. I put 5 drops of purification and 10 drops lemon each on 3 dryer balls. I got my dryer balls from Amazon, easy peasy.
I’ve been making my own deodorant for 2 years now. I use these tubes for an easy squeeze application. I’ve been following this recipe for homemade deodorant from Crunchy Betty but I historically have omitted the essential oils because I didn’t have any. Obviously. I’m sorry, recipe and deodorant should never be used in the same sentence, alas this is my life. Betty used tea tree, sweet orange, and Ylang Ylang. None of these come in the Young Living Starter Kit, frustratingly. BUT there was a sample of Peace and Calming in the Starter Kit which contains Tangerine, Orange and Ylang Ylang! No tea tree but it’s close. I actually already had deodorant made so I heated it in the microwave and added the sample then shook and applied! I recently told a story about my most awkward time in life being post-college when I had gained weight and didn’t take care of myself (and was walking through a sinful season and God just so happened to allow me to meet Joey during this time-shocking, I know). The awkward story was that I was called Granola by someone (OMG a synonym for the derogatory term Granola is “Earth Muffin”) and I 1) didn’t know what that meant and 2) didn’t realize I wasn’t taking care of myself. Here I am almost 10 years later writing a blog post about essential oils and linking to a site called Crunchy Betty, self-fulfilling prophecy?
Anti-Tick and Smell Good for My Dog!
This was probably the straw that broke the camel’s back in terms of pulling the trigger on a Young Living Essential Oil Starter Kit. Wow, 2 cliche phrases in 1 sentence, who am I? Stanley (our Samoyed) had come back from boarding at his veterinary clinic and I saw what appeared to be a family of baby ticks in his fur. My reaction was not exuberance. I immediately drove back to the vet and started him on tick medication (why didn’t they have him on it to begin with?! That’s neither here nor there.) I was very upset because there’s actually nothing you can do if he has ticks on him right now. So I texted an essential oil friend (I think they call themselves oilies?) and she wrote back that lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint, and Purification are best to dispel ticks that are currently on him. Tonight, I furiously combined water and 5 drops each of Purification, lavender, and peppermint into a water bottle, shook, and sprayed him with it. Now he smells good AND it’s anti-tick*!
*He also is on a 3 month supply of anti-tick medication and will be indefinitely because essential oils are not medicine and look at that fur. That’s like tick Tahoe.
That’s it! My life feels fresher and it CERTAINLY smells better than it ever has before. I still plan to use essential oils in our vacuum cleaner instead of carpet deodorizer, get a car diffuser (Stanley stinks up my car too), start using the Thieves dishwashing detergent, and SO much more. But that’s it for now! I’m also having a Norwex party at my house soon so we’re getting CRAZY up in here with the natural stuff. Just call me Earth Muffin.
